I took my wife to visit what was once a place where I worked. I worked for the former business of G. T. Marsh. It was a store that carried fine Asian antiques that exuded class and style. Sadly that is no longer the case within the walls of the building that I so loved. The beautiful red metal doors have been replaced with glass that looks like it came from a ladies trendy boutique. The sign above the front door said that the business was open, however, the door was locked. I pressed a cheap door bell with a rubber button that seemed the type from the bargain end shelf from Home Depot. I pushed it twice because I didn't think I rang it the first time due to the rubbery flimsiness of the button. An Asian man answered the door and rudely commented that it took time to answer the door. I told him that I thought perhaps I had not depressed the doorbell enough to have it ring. I told him that I used to work there when it was G. T. Marsh. He said in a snide manner, "Yeah well, it's not the same place anymore. " Indeed it is not. Marsh's was a place of decorum and class. We did not treat visitors with elitest attitudes and rude behavior. When we entered the maximum security facility ( That's how they make you feel) we were told we had to be let out or we could use the side door to exit. What! Marsh's used to have 4 times their inventory that was worth much more than what Orientations sells and yet they trusted the visitors and treated them with respect as they should have instead as though they were light fingered kleptomaniacs. There are much more subtle ways to safeguard your valuable merchandise. The snooty demeanor the Asian male clerk exibited does not fly well with the attitude of the easy going and classy atmosphere of the Monterey Peninsula. Take that pompous pretensiousness with you to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, it does not belong on Monterey Bay. The decor inside is an odd modern chic Euro design with glass doors, modern contemporary carpet, and glass doors that make the store look like a modern Shangai Hilton lobby and not a fine Asian antique store. The moon door has been altered. The authentic Japanese wooden sliding doors have been replaced with modern glass doors that appear as though they came straight out of a San Francisco Union Square department store. It is a very sparse inventory compated to what G. T. Marsh had to offer for sale. All together the visit was a very disappointing experience and I do believe that due to the poor attitude of the sales personnel that Orientations days are numbered.
